CVE-2022-3093

Root code execution via unvalidated firmware update

Published Mar 29, 2023 · Updated Feb 14, 2025

A TOCTOU race in Tesla Model 3 firmware before 2022.16.0.3 allows physically proximate attackers to execute code as root. The ice_updater mechanism inadequately validates attacker-supplied firmware, allowing the checked firmware state to change before use. Physical access is required, but neither authentication nor user interaction is required; successful exploitation gives the supplied firmware root-level execution.
