Root command execution via overbroad SUID helper
Published Jul 19, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Local privilege escalation in affected Zyxel firewall firmware allows local users with shell access to execute OS commands as root. The zysudo.suid helper permits low-privileged users to invoke an overbroad command allowlist, including copying attacker-controlled files over root-owned paths. Existing shell access is required; overwriting /var/zyxel/crontab schedules attacker-supplied code as root and grants full appliance control.
