Editor crash via empty quickfix list processing
Published Aug 30, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Use-after-free in Vim before 9.0.0322 allows local users to crash the editor by triggering an empty quickfix list. With quickfixtextfunc set, qf_fill_buffer treats a nonnull but empty list as populated and continues with a null qf_start pointer into invalid quickfix state. The target must run a crafted Vim script or equivalent quickfix commands; the demonstrated consequence is a process crash, while memory corruption produces undefined behavior.
