Arbitrary file write via post-validation path conversion
Published May 9, 2022 · Updated Aug 4, 2026
Path traversal in RARLAB UnRAR before 6.12 on Linux and UNIX allows attackers to write files outside the extraction directory. Symlink targets are checked for ../ before Windows backslashes are converted to UNIX separators, so crafted links become traversals only after validation. A malicious RAR must be extracted; automated services can overwrite files under their account and turn the write into code execution.
