CVE-2022-30256Network attack vector

Revoked-domain resolution via cache-expiration bypass

Published Nov 18, 2022 · Updated Apr 29, 2025

Improper cache expiration in MaraDNS Deadwood 3.5.0021 and earlier allows remote attackers to prolong resolution of revoked domains. The recursive resolver allows the Ghost-domain query pattern to retain DNS records beyond max_ttl rather than enforcing its configured cache lifetime. The attacker must be allowed to query a recursive Deadwood instance; the bounded consequence is continued resolution of expired or taken-down domains.
