Cross-site scripting via unescaped JSON object keys
Published May 4, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Cross-site scripting in jquery.json-viewer 1.4.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute script through crafted JSON object keys. The object renderer inserted each property name into generated HTML without passing it through the htmlEscape routine, allowing a SCRIPT element in a key to become live markup. Exploitation requires a consuming application to render attacker-controlled JSON and user interaction with that output; script executes in the application's page origin, enabling data access or modification without a service interruption.
