CVE-2022-2989Public exploit

Protected-file access via omitted primary group

Published Sep 13, 2022 · Updated Jun 5, 2025

Improper group assignment in Podman 3 before 3.0.1 and Podman 4 before 4.2.0 allows local users to read or modify protected files. Container setup omits the user's primary group from supplementary groups, so a setgid binary can drop the denied group and bypass negative group permissions. Exploitation requires code execution inside the container, a setgid binary, and files whose group permissions deny access while other permissions allow it.
