CVE-2022-29654Public exploit

Assembler crash via backslash-counter underrun

Published Aug 22, 2023 · Updated Oct 3, 2024

Heap buffer overflow in NASM before 2.15.05 allows attackers to crash the assembler by processing a crafted source file. In quote_for_pmake in asm/nasm.c, a post-decrement loop leaves the backslash counter at -1, and a later loop reuses that negative value to write beyond the allocated heap buffer. Exploitation requires a user to run NASM on attacker-controlled input; the demonstrated consequence is a process crash rather than a system-wide outage.
