Root escalation via symlink race in sapuxuserchk
Published Jun 14, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in affected SAP startservice releases on Unix allows local users in the sapsys group to gain root access. sapuxuserchk checks a ticket path with stat before opening it and follows an attacker-swapped symbolic link, then changes ownership of the linked file. Membership in sapsys and winning the stat-to-open race are required; success grants read-write access to privileged files and root privileges.
