CVE-2022-29501Network attack vector

Root code execution via privileged socket forwarding

Published May 5, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Incorrect access control in SchedMD Slurm 20.11.x and 21.08.x allows remote authenticated users to execute code with root privileges. The slurmd _rpc_forward_data handler accepts a requester-supplied Unix-socket path and, before the patch, connects and forwards data with the daemon's root authority instead of the requester's UID and GID. A valid unprivileged Slurm credential and network reachability to slurmd are required; successful abuse sends attacker-controlled data to an arbitrary local Unix socket as root.
