Code execution via writable installation binary replacement
Published May 23, 2022 · Updated Aug 15, 2025
Incorrect permissions in XAMPP for Windows 8.1.4 and earlier allow attackers to execute arbitrary code by overwriting installed binaries. The installation directory permits write access that lets attacker-controlled files replace binaries located there. Exploitation requires write access to that directory and later execution of a replaced binary; the public references identify no specific binary or overwrite path.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
Public exploit references
No public exploit references are available in this record.
Labels summarize the accepted research assessment. They do not indicate a test against your environment.
