Local SYSTEM escalation via unquoted service path
Published May 20, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Unquoted service path in MiniTool Partition Wizard 12.0 allows local users to execute code with SYSTEM privileges during service startup. The LocalSystem MTSchedulerService stores its SchedulerService.exe path under Program Files without quotation marks, allowing Windows to resolve an attacker-planted prefix executable first. Exploitation requires permission to place that executable in an earlier path component and a service start or reboot; successful execution grants SYSTEM control.
