CVE-2022-29264

SMM code execution via OS-controlled AP jump target

Published Apr 25, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Code execution in coreboot 4.13 through 4.16 allows local users with operating-system control to execute code in SMM on APs. The SMM module loader copies staggered entry stubs before filling the first stub's parameters, so only the BSP stub targets the permanent handler while AP stubs jump wherever c_handler points. An attacker controlling the operating system can overwrite that target and generate an SMI on an AP, gaining execution above ring 0 in SMM.
