CVE-2022-29238Network attack vector

Authenticated hidden-file disclosure via incomplete path checks

Published Jun 14, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025

Forced browsing in Project Jupyter's Jupyter Notebook before 6.4.12 allows remote authenticated users to read guessable hidden files. With ContentsManager.allow_hidden set to False, the contents service filters directory listings but fails to call is_hidden(path) before directly serving a requested file. Exposure requires a valid authenticated session and a server root containing sensitive hidden paths whose names can be guessed; it adds an unintended access route rather than new privileges.
