CVE-2022-29176Network attack vector

Authenticated gem takeover via yank authorization bypass

Published May 5, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025

Incorrect authorization in RubyGems.org allows remote authenticated users to replace certain gems through the yank action. The action treats ownership of the name prefix before a dash as authority to yank the longer-named gem, then accepts replacement content under its name and version with a different platform. The target gem must contain a dash and be either under 30 days old or unchanged for more than 100 days, enabling package-content takeover.
