CVE-2022-29166Network attack vector

IRC command execution via carriage-return injection

Published May 5, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025

Command injection in Matrix.org matrix-appservice-irc 0.33.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute IRC commands through a crafted reply. node-irc mishandles a carriage return in reply text, sending the following text verbatim to the IRC server instead of as channel content. Exploitation requires access to an IRC-bridged Matrix room and a Matrix user to reply; injected commands run with that user's IRC identity.
