Remote code execution via outputFunctionName injection
Published Apr 25, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Server-side template injection in ejs 3.1.6 for Node.js allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary OS commands via crafted view options. The renderFile settings[view options][outputFunctionName] value is copied into generated template source without identifier validation, so injected syntax runs when the template compiles. Exploitation requires a remotely reachable application that passes attacker-controlled view options to ejs; successful attacks execute with the Node.js process privileges and can read, alter, or disrupt accessible resources.
