Heap over-read via constant _ENV mishandling
Published Apr 8, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Heap-based buffer over-read in the Lua parser in Lua 5.4.0 through 5.4.3 allows attackers to read beyond heap bounds via crafted code. The singlevar function indexes a constant _ENV without first calling luaK_exp2anyregup to convert the expression into the representation expected by the code generator. The trigger requires an application to compile attacker-controlled Lua code containing the constant-environment pattern; the published evidence establishes an over-read, not code execution.
