Root privilege escalation via filename-based signature bypass
Published Aug 17, 2022 · Updated Sep 16, 2024
Improper package signature validation in Zoom Client for Meetings for macOS before 5.11.3 allows local users to gain root privileges. The privileged updater searches all pkgutil output for expected signer strings, allowing package-name content to satisfy the check instead of validating the certificate chain. Low-privileged local access is sufficient to make an accepted package execute as root.
