CVE-2022-28737

Code execution via oversized EFI section copy

Published Jul 20, 2023 · Updated Oct 22, 2024

Out-of-bounds write in Red Hat shim before 15.6 allows local users to execute code by booting a crafted EFI executable. The handle_image() path allocates each section from VirtualSize but passes attacker-controlled SizeOfRawData to CopyMem, allowing the copy to exceed the destination. Exploitation requires high local privileges and user interaction to load the crafted image; successful corruption can execute code in the UEFI boot context.
