Process crash via uint32_t extraction underflow
Published Aug 17, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Out-of-bounds memory access in LibTIFF tiffcrop 4.4.0rc1 allows local users to crash the utility with a crafted TIFF file. The extractContigSamples8bits and extractContigSamplesShifted32bits routines perform uint32_t arithmetic that underflows, producing out-of-range reads and writes. Exploitation requires a user to invoke tiffcrop with the crafted file and specific crop parameters; the grounded consequence is a process crash, while further exploitation is not demonstrated.
