CVE-2022-2862Public exploit

Editor crash via failed nested-function compilation

Published Aug 17, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Use-after-free in Vim before 9.0.0221 allows attackers to crash the editor by opening a crafted Vim9 script that fails compilation. In compile_nested_function(), a failed nested-function compile frees the function object but leaves its local-variable name usable during subsequent lookup. Exploitation requires user interaction with attacker-supplied Vim9 code; the upstream regression demonstrates a process failure, while code execution is not established.
