Spreadsheet formula execution via incomplete prefix filtering
Published May 1, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
CSV injection in CSV-Safe before 3.0.0 allows attackers to place spreadsheet formulas in generated CSV files via crafted fields. The starts_with_special_character? check omits percent and pipe prefixes, so the prefix method leaves those formula-bearing fields unquoted. Exploitation requires an application to pass attacker-controlled data into CSV-Safe and a spreadsheet to interpret the exported field, enabling formula-driven commands or data access.
