Editor crash via negative display column
Published Aug 17, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Buffer under-read in Vim before 9.0.0218 allows context-dependent attackers to crash the editor through a crafted command sequence. The display_dollar function accepts a negative column while rendering a dollar marker and uses it to read before the current line buffer. A user must run the crafted editor commands; the demonstrated consequence is termination of the Vim process.
