Malicious code execution via unsigned drive image
Published Jun 8, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Insufficient verification in Verbatim Fingerprint Secure Portable Hard Drive #53650 allows attackers to execute malicious software via a modified emulated CD-ROM image. The drive stores Windows and macOS client software as an ISO-9660 image in hidden sectors that can be rewritten through special IOCTL access or an external enclosure, without integrity checks. Temporary physical access during supply-chain handling is sufficient to replace the image; later users can execute the software and attackers can decrypt stored data when the altered drive accepts an attacker-controlled password.
