CVE-2022-28383Public exploit

Firmware code execution via CRC-16-only validation

Published Jun 8, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Firmware validation flaws in Verbatim secure USB drives through 2022-03-31 allow physically proximate attackers to execute bridge firmware. The INIC-3637EN controller accepts firmware from SPI flash based only on an attacker-recomputable XMODEM CRC-16 checksum instead of authenticating the code. Temporary physical access and a universal programmer are required on models #49428, GD25LK01-3637-C VER4.0, GDMSFE01-INI3637-C VER1.1, and #53650; malicious firmware can replace encryption keys, expose stored data, or disrupt the drive.
