Process crash via unchecked JPEG Huffman index
Published Apr 15, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Heap use-after-free in stb_image.h 2.27 allows attackers to crash a consuming process by supplying a crafted JPEG file. During JPEG Huffman decoding, a malformed code produces an out-of-range index that stbi__jpeg_huff_decode uses without a bounds check after the input buffer has been freed. The application must pass the attacker-controlled image to the embedded decoder; the public reproducer establishes a process abort, while further code-execution consequences have not been demonstrated.
