Local privilege escalation via SYSTEM temp execution
Published Jun 10, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Local privilege escalation in RealVNC VNC Server 5.1.0 through 6.9.0 for Windows allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges via MSI repair. During installer repair, files from the initiating user's %TEMP% directory are executed under the SYSTEM account, allowing a local low-privilege user to run arbitrary code with elevated privileges. Exploitation requires local access and the MSI repair operation; no remote attack path is described.
