Application crash via sign-changing face index cast
Published Apr 22, 2022 · Updated Jul 9, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in FreeType before 2.12.0 allows context-dependent attackers to crash applications through a crafted face index. ft_open_face_internal casts the FT_Long face_index argument to FT_Int without first constraining it, allowing the cast to change its sign before the driver processes the value. Reachability requires a consuming application to pass an attacker-influenced, out-of-range face index; the demonstrated consequence is a segmentation fault and application crash.
