Application crash via unchecked face-index decrement
Published Apr 22, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Heap buffer overflow in FreeType before 2.12.0 allows context-dependent attackers to crash applications via a crafted font and negative face index. In sfnt_init_face and woff2_open_font, a zero face_index derived from a negative face_instance_index is decremented without a zero guard, underflowing before bounds validation. Reachability requires a caller to supply attacker-controlled font data and a negative face index; the documented result is an out-of-bounds heap access and application crash.
