CVE-2022-27239

Local root escalation via unchecked ip option copy

Published Apr 27, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Stack-based buffer overflow in mount.cifs in cifs-utils 6.14 and earlier allows local users to gain root privileges via the ip= option. The parse_options function accepts an input of MAX_ADDRESS_LEN bytes because an off-by-one length comparison succeeds, then copies it into parsed_info->addrlist with unbounded strcpy. The helper is usually installed setuid root, so a low-privileged local user who can invoke it can overwrite stack memory and execute with root privileges.
