SYSTEM privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published May 20, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in BattlEye 0.9 allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM through the BEService executable path. The Windows service registers C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\BattlEye\BEService.exe without quotation marks, so Windows can resolve an attacker-planted executable in a higher-level directory before the intended binary. Exploitation requires low-privileged filesystem access to place such an executable and service startup or a system reboot, after which the payload runs as LocalSystem.
