SYSTEM code execution via unquoted service path
Published May 20, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Local privilege escalation in Sony PlayMemories Home 6.0 allows local users to execute code as SYSTEM through an unquoted service path. The PMBDeviceInfoProvider service registers its executable path under Program Files (x86) without quotation marks, allowing Windows to resolve an earlier executable name at service startup. Exploitation requires write access to a searched path location and a service start or system reboot; successful code runs with LocalSystem privileges.
