Administrator code execution via theme template editing
Published Apr 5, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Code injection in Simple Machines Forum 2.1.1 and earlier allows remote authenticated administrators to execute arbitrary PHP code. The theme editor writes administrator-supplied PHP into Admin.template.php, which the forum later interprets as server-side code. Administrator access is required to plant the code, after which a theme request executes it under the web server account without another login; the vendor considers this intended behavior.
