SYSTEM privilege escalation via race condition
Published Sep 13, 2022 · Updated Mar 11, 2025
A race condition in the Windows Photo Import API allows local users with low privileges to gain SYSTEM privileges on affected Windows builds. Microsoft identifies a timing race in the API but has not published the shared resource, function, or sequence that lacks synchronization. Exploitation requires an existing local foothold and winning the race; success grants complete SYSTEM-level control.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
