Network credential disclosure via registry password storage
Published Mar 9, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Cleartext credential storage in Veritas System Recovery 18 and 21 allows local users to obtain a configured network destination password. During backup configuration, the application writes the network destination password to the Windows registry, where a sufficiently privileged Windows account can retrieve it. Access requires a Windows account with enough registry privileges, and the exposed credential grants access to a network file system otherwise unavailable to that account.
