SYSTEM privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published May 20, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Unquoted service path handling in HMA VPN 5.3.5913.0 allows local users to execute code with SYSTEM privileges during service startup. The HmaProVpn service mishandles its space-containing VpnSvc.exe path, allowing Windows path-search interception by an attacker-controlled executable. Local users must be able to place that executable in a searched path; code runs when the service starts or the system reboots.
