Local privilege escalation via mailbox type confusion
Published Aug 1, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Type confusion in MediaTek mailbox software on Android 11.0, 12.0 and Yocto 3.1, 3.3 allows local users to gain elevated privileges. The mailbox component accesses a resource through an incompatible type, causing an out-of-bounds memory write. Exploitation requires existing System execution privileges and no user interaction; MediaTek does not identify the resulting privilege level.
