Privilege escalation via add-on signature-check race
Published Dec 22, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
A TOCTOU race in add-on installation in Firefox before 98, Firefox ESR before 91.7, and Thunderbird before 91.7 allows privilege escalation. The Add-ons Manager verifies an XPI signature and reads prompt metadata, then releases the file and installs it later without rechecking changed contents. Attackers must replace the XPI while a user confirms installation; exploitation installs tampered add-on code and can hijack a privileged add-on.
