Host takeover via cache-coherency safety bypass
Published Jun 9, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in all Xen versions allows guest OS users with PV device access to take control of an affected x86 host. The hypervisor's page-type safety logic assumes cache contents match main memory, so CPU-induced divergence lets a guest make unaudited page-table contents appear safe. Exploitation requires administrator control of an x86 PV guest with device access on a CPU capable of non-coherent memory accesses; success grants control of the entire host.
