CVE-2022-2598Public exploit

Editor crash via underflowed diff line number

Published Aug 1, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Out-of-bounds write in Vim before 9.0.0100 allows attackers to crash the editor through crafted diff-mode input. In src/diff.c, diff_mark_adjust_tp subtracts an offset from a diff-block line number without clamping it, allowing the value to fall below one after diff put and undo operations. A user must open the crafted input and exercise diff put followed by undo; the documented consequence is invalid memory access and process termination.
