CVE-2022-2596Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Application hang via referrer hostname regex

Published Aug 1, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Regular expression denial of service in node-fetch 3.0.0 through 3.2.9 allows remote attackers to hang Node.js applications via crafted referrer URLs. The isOriginPotentiallyTrustworthy() function in src/utils/referrer.js applies a nested, backtracking hostname regular expression to the URL host. An application must pass attacker-controlled referrer input to fetch(); alternating letters and periods drive excessive CPU use and block its event loop.
