Script execution via unsafe tooltip HTML construction
Published Dec 21, 2022 · Updated Apr 16, 2025
DOM-based XSS in Joe Walnes Smoothie Charts 1.31.0 through 1.36.0 allows remote attackers to execute scripts via crafted chart options. The default tooltipFormatter concatenates tooltipLabel and strokeStyle into a span string that the chart tooltip assigns to innerHTML without HTML-safe DOM construction. Exploitation requires an embedding application to expose either property to attacker control and a user to display the affected tooltip, enabling script execution in that application's browser context.
