Arbitrary code execution via unsanitized format strings
Published Aug 29, 2022 · Updated Sep 17, 2024
Code injection in IndexZero morgan-json 1.1.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted format string. The compile and compileObject paths splice format-derived text into generated JavaScript and pass the result to the Function constructor without neutralizing executable syntax. Exploitation requires a consuming Node.js application to let attackers influence the logging format, and injected code runs with that application process's privileges.
