Host code execution via mutable WeakMap prototype
Published Dec 21, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
Code injection in Patrik Simek vm2 before 3.9.10 allows remote attackers to execute code on the host through sandboxed JavaScript. The setup-sandbox.js wrapper invokes WeakMap.prototype.set through a mutable prototype lookup, so sandbox code can replace the method and recover a host object through Error stack preparation. Exploitation requires an application to run attacker-controlled JavaScript in vm2 and grants access to the host process outside the intended sandbox.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
