Application hang via greedy whitespace regular expressions
Published Jun 21, 2023 · Updated Dec 6, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in npm semver before 7.5.2 allows remote attackers to hang applications with crafted ranges. The Range parser applies greedy whitespace patterns to untrusted range text, making matching consume excessive CPU until completion. The consequence is an application hang only when consuming code passes attacker-controlled range strings to the library.
