CVE-2022-2571

Code execution via insert-completion out-of-bounds read

Published Aug 1, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Heap-based buffer overflow in Vim before 9.0.0101 allows context-dependent attackers to execute code via a crafted file. In src/insexpand.c, ins_comp_get_next_word_or_line advances a line pointer by compl_length during insert-mode completion without verifying that the line contains that many bytes. Exploitation requires a user to open attacker-controlled content and invoke the affected completion path; the resulting over-read can crash the editor or enable code execution.
