Code execution via unchecked MP4 count sums
Published Sep 23, 2022 · Updated Apr 21, 2025
Heap-based buffer overflow in FFmpeg 5.1 allows attackers to execute code when a malicious MP4 file is processed. In libavformat/mov.c, build_open_gop_key_points sums attacker-controlled count fields without overflow checks, allocates undersized arrays, then writes past their bounds. Execution requires the crafted file to be opened or transcoded; the demonstrated result is a heap overwrite and process crash, with arbitrary code execution as the reported worst case.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
