Local privilege escalation via writable ACL
Published Feb 20, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Pritunl Client through 1.2.3019.52 on Windows allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges via an insecure directory ACL. The Windows service permits users to write files under its ProgramData directory, enabling replacement of a sanitized VPN profile with one that causes SYSTEM-level file writes and then execution of an attacker-controlled ipconfig.bat from the service working directory. Exploitation requires local access and a connection attempt; successful exploitation grants SYSTEM confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.
