Application crash via uncaught XML parsing exception
Published Aug 22, 2023 · Updated Oct 3, 2024
An uncaught exception in json2xml 3.12.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash consuming applications via malformed data. Json2xml.to_xml passes generated XML to defusedxml.minidom.parseString without catching ExpatError, so malformed input propagates an exception. Exploitation requires an application to process attacker-controlled data with pretty output enabled, and the unhandled exception interrupts that application.
